LOCHGELLY, W.Va. (AP) - Work is underway to reclaim waste pits at an injection well in Fayette County.

James Martin, the head of the state Office of Oil and Gas, tells West Virginia Public Radio (https://bit.ly/1mN5mKw) that the pits will be filled with soil after the waste is removed.

The injection well pumped oil and gas drilling waste underground. The pits were used to remove sediments from the waste.

The state Department of Environmental Protection ordered the pits’ closure in February after the operator, Danny Webb Construction, didn’t submit a plan to bring them into compliance with code.

The DEP renewed the injection well’s permit in February. The agency later revoked the permit following an appeal by several groups and a resident.

Danny Webb has said he has operated the well legally.
