CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell has finalized his contract to become president at the College of Charleston.

McConnell signed the five-year deal with the school on Monday. He will start his new job on July 1, allowing him to finish the legislative session.

McConnell will be paid $300,000 a year, with $188,000 coming from the state. McConnell will also be able to live in the president’s house on campus and have use of a car.

When McConnell leaves the lieutenant governor’s post, it will likely remain empty until whoever is chosen in November’s election takes over next January. Under the state constitution, the Senate president pro tem is next in line for the job, but Sen. John Courson has said he will not relinquish his current seat.
