SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Gov. Pat Quinn is calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to block a proposal to dump toxic waste at a landfill located above an aquifer.

The Mahomet Aquifer supplies drinking water to hundreds of thousands of people in central Illinois.

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reports (https://bit.ly/1owUdzK ) that Quinn wrote to the EPA on Wednesday, urging the project to be scrapped.

In his letter, Quinn contends the proposal to dispose of PCBs at the Clinton Landfill poses a “significant risk” of contaminating the aquifer.

The company that owns the landfill has said it would install a liner to protect the water source.

A group of mayors from central Illinois appealed last week for Quinn to weigh in on the issue.
