PORT ARANSAS, Texas (AP) - The small Gulf of Mexico beach town of Port Aransas wants to stay small.

The city council has approved a two-month moratorium on building permits for any single retail store that’s bigger than 25,000 square feet.

The panel on Thursday also took steps to establish a cap on store size to keep big stores out of the town on Mustang Island across the bay from Corpus Christi.

Mayor Keith McMullin tells the Corpus Christi Caller-Times (https://bit.ly/1iSe7xc ) residents have told him they like their small shops and stores that give the place the feel of a quaint Gulf beach town.

City officials say construction of a nearby Schlitterbahn water park has large retailers eyeing undeveloped land around Port Aransas.
