FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Alaska fire officials have dropped a plan to reclassify a prescribed burn on Army land near Delta Junction.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (https://is.gd/fWoohk) the prescribed burn was started Saturday to burn off about 50,000 areas at the Army’s Donnelly Training Area.

When that grew to 56,000 acres, fire officials had considered reclassifying the burn as a wildfire in case additional resources were needed.

However, the spread of the fire in grass and tundra slowed, and officials put it on unmonitored status as of Wednesday.

Not counting prescribed burns, officials say there’s been 102 wildfires in Alaska so far this year, burning more than 150 acres.
