LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel is again asking the state’s highest court to suspend a judge’s ruling striking down a gay marriage ban.

McDaniel’s office asked the state Supreme Court on Thursday to stay Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza’s ruling striking down all laws preventing gay couples from marrying. Earlier Thursday, Piazza clarified his decision last week striking down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, saying it also applies to a law prohibiting clerks from issuing marriage licenses to gay couples.

The state Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to stay Piazza’s original decision, noting that the marriage license law was still on the books.

The AG’s office said the stay is needed to resolve confusion and uncertainty among clerks around the state on whether to issue marriage licenses.
