MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Gov. Peter Shumlin wants an investigation of the state Department for Children and Families after learning a caseworker visited a home on a child abuse claim shortly before the child died.

The child, 15-month-old Peighton Geraw, died an hour after the April 4 visit by the caseworker to his Winooski home.

Authorities call the death a homicide, but no one has been charged in the case.

In February, 2-year-old Dezirae Sheldon, of Poultney, died of head injuries. Her stepfather has pleaded not guilty to a second-degree murder charge.

“This is the second loss of a precious young life in recent months,” Shumlin said in a statement released to the Burlington Free Press.

“While I immediately instructed DCF Commissioner (David) Yacovone to investigate each case thoroughly, I have also demanded a broader examination of our systems so that we can take any steps necessary to better protect our children,” the statement said.

Police said Fletcher Allen Health Care personnel spotted bruises on Peighton’s neck while treating him for a fever and vomiting on April 2. The hospital notified DCF, but discharged Peighton into the care of his mother and her boyfriend.

Shortly after the DCF worker left, Peighton was discovered not breathing. The boy was taken back to the hospital, where he was declared dead.

Yacovone said an internal review would be conducted.
