BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The superintendent of schools in Vermont’s largest city will be getting a $225,000 severance package when she steps down at the end of next month.

The Burlington school board voted unanimously Tuesday to accept the agreement that will have Superintendent Jeanne Collins leave the post on June 30, two years before her contract expires.

The severance package is close to the amount Collins would have earned had she worked through the final two years of her contract.

In a statement, the district said the board’s decision to seek the departure of Collins came in response to financial issues, including the third consecutive budget deficit in excess of $1 million.

Collins became superintendent in 2006 after serving as special education director.
