CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Members of the New Hampshire House rose and held a moment of silence in honor of fallen Police Officer Stephen Arkell.

The moment came at the start of Wednesday’s session.

On Tuesday night, about 500 people in Brentwood gathered for a candlelight vigil for Arkell, who was shot in the line of duty Monday while responding to a domestic disturbance.

People remembered him as a devoted family man who cared about his community.

Arkell also was a volunteer assistant coach for his daughters’ high school lacrosse team and was known for his carpentry skills.

In Washington, Sen. Kelly Ayotte called Arkell an unsung hero who went about his work in a quiet, humble way and touched many lives. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen said his commitment to protecting the community was unparalleled.
