DANBURY, Conn. (AP) - A dozen or so beavers are chewing trees to the nub in a Danbury park, taking the wood to build dams and confounding Danbury officials who have ruled out killing the animals.
The News Times reports (https://bit.ly/1sC2QbK ) that beavers have girdled or knocked down native poplar trees at the park. Nearly a dozen trees are dead or dying.
Danbury’s abundant supply of beaver pelts was critical to the city’s development as a center of hat manufacturing in the 19th and early 20th centuries. And with beavers’ place in the town’s history, Mayor Mark Boughton said eradication is out of the question.
He says the city’s Public Works Department will dismantle the dams and fallen and gnawed trees will be cleaned up and new trees possibly planted.
