MANKATO, Minn. (AP) - Former Minnesota Gophers quarterback Philip Robert Nelson was jailed following an altercation in Mankato early Sunday that sent a former Minnesota State, Mankato, linebacker to the hospital in critical condition.
A police statement said officers came across Isaac Dallas Kolstad, 24, of Mankato, while patrolling the city’s downtown entertainment district around 2 a.m. The 20-year-old Nelson was arrested at the scene and taken to the Blue Earth County jail, the statement said.
Police are requesting felony charges of third-degree assault, KTOE-AM reported.
Nelson left the Gophers in January to transfer to Rutgers, which is moving into the Big Ten next season. He played in 11 games last season, but said Rutgers offered a more pass-friendly offense. He completed 50.5 percent of his passes for 1,306 yards with nine touchdowns and six interceptions last season. He also rushed for 364 yards and six touchdowns while sharing quarterback duties with Mitch Leidner.
Nelson was going to sit out the 2014 season and then would have had two seasons of eligibility left. Nelson was a star at Mankato West High School, where he was both Minnesota’s Mr. Football and the Associated Press Player of the Year in 2011.

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) - A woman credited with potentially averting a school attack in the southern Minnesota city of Waseca says the suspect acted strangely as he approached a self-storage facility near her apartment.
Chelsie Schellhas told The Free Press of Mankato (https://bit.ly/1sBxXErhttps://bit.ly/1sBxXEr ) she watched through her tiny kitchen window as he cut though her backyard to reach the facility on April 29. She said he slogged through calf-deep puddles instead of taking a parallel path on the dry road. She said she then watched him struggle for about 10 minutes to unlock a unit before finally sliding open the door, stepping inside and quickly closing it behind him.
She had her cousin, Katie Harty, who lives downstairs, call police.
“It felt like he was trying to hide himself. Nobody cuts through our backyard. There was no reason he would want to go that way,” Schellhas said.
The two women were concerned he was a homeless person living in the unit or someone secretly cooking up meth.

The woman’s name, age and cause of death have not been released.
The case will be referred to the Ramsey County attorney’s office for possible charges.

NISSWA, Minn. (AP) - The 2015 Governor’s Fishing Opener will be held in the Lake Vermilion area of northeastern Minnesota.
Explore Minnesota Tourism says the Lake Vermilion Resort Association will host the annual event on May 7-10, 2015. The headquarters will be Fortune Bay Resort, which is owned and operated by the Bois Forte (boys fort) Band of Chippewa. Lake Vermilion also hosted the governor’s opener in 2005.
Dayton didn’t catch anything while fishing on Gull Lake for this year’s opener. His guide, Ray Gildow, tells the Star Tribune they missed four or five fish Saturday. He says they had a good time, but the cold water and late spawning apparently made the walleyes tight-lipped.
Lt. Gov Yvonne Prettner Solon had better luck. She caught four walleyes.
