MAGNOLIA, Miss. (AP) - Magnolia Mayor Melvin Harris has resigned from office, nearly a year into his second full term.

Harris submitted his letter of resignation Friday.

The Enterprise-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1nCcOaU ) Harris confirmed his resignation and referred questions to his granddaughter, Dominique Washington.

Washington told the newspaper the 81-year-old Harris resigned so he could spend more time with his family and enjoy his retirement.

A special election must be held no sooner than 30 days and no later than 45 days after the date on which the board of aldermen accepts the resignation.

Harris served as alderman for 34 years before winning the mayoral seat in a special election in 2008, when his predecessor, Jim Storer, resigned. He was elected to his first term in 2009 and for a second in 2013.
