COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - The Columbus City Council has named Martin Andrews chief of Columbus Fire and Rescue.
The Commercial Dispatch reported (https://bit.ly/1hxZ9Nm) Andrews was named interim chief in April after Chief Kenner Moore announced his retirement in March.
The council set Andrews’ annual salary at $67,000.
Andrews formerly was assistant chief under Moore. He has been with the department since 1987.
He said he plans to continue improvements made in recent years in the department’s performance and response ratings.
Andrews’ hire is the latest in a series of city department head changes.
The City Council consolidated the offices of federal programs and city planning into the Office of Planning and Community Development. Then city planner Christina Berry was appointed to lead the department after Travis Jones was reassigned as a project coordinator.
In April, Police Chief Selvain McQueen retired and Assistant Chief Tony Carleton was named interim chief.
Mayor Robert Smith said he hopes a permanent police chief will be hired by the end of May.
