LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - An attorney for four Arkansas counties says he’ll ask a judge for guidance on how to proceed after a decision striking down the state’s gay marriage ban.

Jason Owens said Saturday that he’ll ask Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza for clarification of his Friday ruling striking down a 2004 constitutional amendment and a 1997 law banning same-sex marriage. Piazza did not stay the ruling.

Owens represents four of six county clerks named as defendants in the lawsuit.

Owens said clerks need clarification about parts of state law that may conflict with Piazza’s ruling but weren’t specifically addressed. He noted the decision didn’t specifically tell county clerks - who issue marriage licenses - to do anything.

Carroll County on Saturday began issuing the first same-sex marriage licenses in Arkansas.
