MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Robert Bentley is seeking additional federal assistance to help Alabama recover from this week’s severe weather.
The governor wrote a letter to the president saying Alabama needs an expedited major disaster declaration because of tornadoes in the northern part of the state and flooding in the southern part. That would provide for individual assistance for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover.
The counties included in the initial request are Baldwin, Lee, Limestone and Jefferson, but the governor says more may be added.
The governor had earlier sought a declaration that would help Alabama counties with debris removal and other recovery activities.
