MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) - Marquette County is seeking a state emergency declaration to help deal with problems from the harsh winter.
The Mining Journal of Marquette and WLUC-TV report the county in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula made the request this week to Gov. Rick Snyder.
The aim is to get more state and, perhaps, federal money to the county. Frozen water mains have drained local resources, with the bill so far totaling an estimated $300,000. Officials are collecting information about costs from area communities.
Last month, Marquette County officials declared a countywide state of emergency, one initial step to take before requesting relief from higher levels of government.
Other Michigan communities also have been hard-hit by the cold weather and heavy snowfalls. The costs of water main breaks and snow removal have been high.
