ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Anchorage is getting new rides for commuters with disabilities.
The city announced Thursday that it’s spending $730,000 to buy 14 new vans for AnchorRides, the public transportation system for people with disabilities.
The Anchorage Daily News (https://bit.ly/1kBFMss) reports the new vans will replace about a quarter of the current fleet.
The new vans will be MV-1s, built by the same company in Indiana that makes Humvees.
The city says they’re designed for use by passengers with disabilities, in contrast to other vans that have to be retrofitted.
They allow passengers in wheel chairs to sit in the front seat. AnchorRides marketing manager Paula Kangis says they look more like standard sedans, which customers enjoy.
The new vans are expected by the middle of 2014.
