BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) - A collection of letters written by a famous Civil War general is being donated to his western New York hometown.
The Daily News of Batavia reports (https://bit.ly/P0yjq3 ) that 13 military letters written by Gen. Emory Upton between 1863 and 1879 are being donated to the Genesee County History Department in Batavia by Sal Cilella of Atlanta.
Cilella is writing two books on Upton, a Batavia native who became one of the most influential military figures to emerge from the Civil War.
The West Point graduate led Union troops in some of the war’s bloodiest battles, including Antietam and Gettysburg. The books on battle tactics he wrote after the war were used for decades by the U.S. military.
There’s a monument to Upton in downtown Batavia. He’s buried in Auburn’s Fort Hill cemetery.
