WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - A vacant building that once housed a landmark business in Luzerne County will soon be a part of a local university.

Wilkes University announced Wednesday it’s buying the former Bartikowsky’s Jewelers in Wilkes-Barre for $1.2 million as part of an expansion project.

The former jewelry store went out of business a year ago. It will initially be used by the university for administrative offices and a student services center.

Wilkes said it is also spending $3 million to renovate the University Center on Main, transforming it into the new home of its business school.

The project is expected to be completed during the 2014-15 academic year.
