SELMA, Ala. (AP) - Selma’s annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee will feature civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, Tony Award-winning entertainer Jennifer Holliday and others.
The annual event commemorates March 7, 1965, when voting rights marchers were beaten by law enforcement on Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge.
Organizers of the Bridge Crossing Jubilee say events begin Thursday with a speech by NAACP board member William Barber.
Holliday will appear in concert Saturday. Others scheduled to perform include rapper Young Dro and blues singer Peggy Scott-Adams. Academy Award-winning actor Lou Gossett Jr. will be honored Saturday night.
Organizers say Jackson and others will speak Sunday and participate in a re-enactment of the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
A group leaves Selma on Monday to go to Washington to seek new protections for voting rights.
