FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - The interim police chief in Florence has been given the job permanently.

City officials announced the promotion of Allen Heidler on Tuesday. Heidler was the police department’s inspector before Chief Anson Shells stepped down six months ago. He had run the agency since then.

Heidler has already taken some steps to reorganize the department, including getting senior commanders out on the street with patrol officers around the clock.

Heidler has worked for Florence Police for more than 30 years as a patrol officer, investigator and in the traffic division.
