PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A man shot by a Providence police officer has been charged with heroin possession, domestic assault, vandalism and disorderly conduct.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1kuecxk) that Dari Garcia was arraigned Monday in District Court.
The 24-year-old Garicia is still recovering after Officer Ryan Moroney shot him twice Feb. 17 during a fight with Garcia’s family. Authorities say Garcia assaulted his mother and smashed a window of a van belonging to his sister. A baby was in the vehicle.
Garcia’s lawyer told police his family called because he was upset and trying to leave.
Police prosecutor David Brien told the judge that Garcia had a hand in his waistband and refused the officer’s order to remove it. Moroney believed Garcia had a gun and shot him.
Garcia was unarmed and police found he was carrying heroin.
