LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Fire Department says a man was critically injured in a house fire.

The department said in a statement that firefighters arrived on Monday afternoon to find thick smoke pouring from the back of the one-story house in West Los Angeles.

Firefighters found a man inside with severe facial burns and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Three dozen firefighters had the blaze out in about 20 minutes, confining it mostly to the back of the home. The fire did an estimated $275,000 in damage.

The house had a working smoke detector that was going off when firefighters arrived, but no sprinklers.
