LINVILLE, N.C. (AP) - High winds have leveled the Grandfather Mountain sign in Linville that was designed by the same man who designed the Mile High Swinging Bridge.
Grandfather Mountain officials say winds leveled the wooden sign Sunday morning. It had stood at the intersection of U.S. 221 and N.C. 105 in Linville for nearly 60 years.
A weather station at the Mile High Swinging Bridge recorded hurricane-force winds throughout the night with gusts as high as 92.5 mph.
Harris Prevost of the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation says the sign was fragile, with many rotting boards.
Architect Charles Hartman designed both the sign and the bridge.
