ST. MATTHEWS, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina’s first African-American woman elected to the state senate is speaking at Calhoun County High School.
The Times and Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1iAgxnc ) Glover’s speech marking Women’s History Month is Sunday. It is sponsored by The Jewels Coalition, a group dedicated to social and political issues. Tickets are $20 for the event.
Glover was elected to the senate in 1993 and was a member of the House of Representative from 1989 to 1992.
Born in Florence, she graduated from Fayetteville State University and got a Master’s in education from Francis Marion College.
As a lawmaker, Glover was an advocate for the poor, elderly, women and children. She worked to remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse dome.
