CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Public school and college students across West Virginia are getting a day off from class because of a winter storm.

About a dozen public and private higher education institutions cancelled classes Monday, including West Virginia University’s main campus in Morgantown, WVU Tech in Montgomery and WVU Parkersburg.

Most public school systems and some private schools also are closed.

The storm began Sunday as rain and changed overnight to sleet and then snow. Winter storm warnings remain in effect through Monday evening for most of the state.

The National Weather Service says up to a foot of snow is possible in parts of Nicholas, Webster, Pocahontas and Randolph counties. Other areas could see 6 inches to 8 inches.
