SEATTLE (AP) - Washington transportation officials say Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass has reopened after a prolonged closure due to heavy snow and avalanche danger.

The Transportation Department closed Washington’s main east-west highway Sunday night, and it remained closed until late Monday afternoon.

Spokesman Bart Treece says crews needed to bring down and clear avalanches. He says recent layers of heavy snow are unstable because of rising temperatures.

U.S. Highway 2 over Stevens Pass also was closed at times Monday for avalanche control. Meanwhile, Highway 12 over White Pass remains open with traction tires advised.
