FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Residents of Fairbanks North Star Borough now have a better chance of having penalties waived for late property tax payments.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (https://is.gd/poEXIo ) the assembly voted this week to ease the penalty and the appeals process.

The chief financial officer can OK an appeal if taxes were late because of a natural disaster or some unusual event beyond a taxpayer’s control.

Other excuses will go before the assembly for consideration.

Assemblyman Lance Roberts sponsored the ordinance. Roberts says he understands from personal experience that you can sometimes try your absolute best and have something go wrong.
