FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - The mayor of Fairbanks North Star Borough asked for and received the authority to ban fireworks when fire danger is extreme.

Mayor Luke Hopkins says he’ll ban fireworks if wildfires threaten the health and safety of residents.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (https://is.gd/O5XuAe ) the assembly voted 7-1 in favor of granting Hopkins that power.

Assemblyman Lance Roberts voted no. He says the measure does not adequately define “extreme fire danger,” and that could lead to problems.
