SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - A former Fullerton police officer who was acquitted of murder and manslaughter in the 2011 death of a homeless man wants immunity from federal prosecution if he testifies in a civil case.
The Orange County Register reported Friday (https://bit.ly/O5RNIu) that Manuel Ramos is scheduled to give a deposition next month in the wrongful-death lawsuit brought by Kelly Thomas’ father.
Ramos and two other officers were charged in Thomas’ death.
He was taken off life support in July 2011 after a violent confrontation with police.
Ramos and Cpl. Jay Cicinelli were acquitted and prosecutors dismissed charges against a third officer.
In court papers, Ramos says the FBI is investigating the case.
If Ramos isn’t given immunity, he wants a judge to limit the scope of questioning in the deposition.
