NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The City Council is raising the salary and extending the contract of the director of the city-owned Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

Nola.comThe Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/1jAksEi ) the increase of $35,285 will bring Iftikhar Ahmad’s annual pay to $270,230.

He is the city’s highest-paid employee.



The council’s vote Thursday also extends Ahmad’s contract through May 2019.

An $826 million terminal is planned at the airport. Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell argued it was vital to keep Ahmad at work.

Other council members credited him with the airport’s successful turnaround in recent years.
