WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois city is getting millions of dollars in help from federal taxpayers to move its sewer plant.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan (https://bit.ly/1glLbBo) reports that the $6.4 million grant to West Frankfort is from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The 8,200-resident Franklin County city will contribute $2.1 million.
The project involves relocating the wastewater-treatment plant to a new location that will be elevated higher as a flood precaution.
Illinois Emergency Management Agency Director Jonathon Monken says past flooding has knocked the plant out of service, including for more than 200 days in 2008.
It’s not immediately clear how soon the project may begin or be completed.
