CANTON, N.Y. (AP) - The head of New York’s public university system is recommending a new president for the Canton campus.

State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher has chosen Dr. Zvi Szafran (ZVEE SAH-zah-fran) to lead SUNY Canton in St. Lawrence County.

Szafran is currently vice president for academic affairs at Southern Polytechnic State University in Georgia.

The SUNY Board of Trustees will consider the recommendation at its April 3 meeting.

Zimpher cites Szafran’s ability to identify students’ needs and to enhance academic programs and services to meet those needs.

He would succeed Joseph Kennedy, who retired in 2012 after 19 years.
