WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A jury has sentenced a Forsyth County man to the death penalty for killing his wife in 2010 after she told him she was leaving him.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1kQVRs5 ) jurors took about two hours to come to their decision Friday, ending a seven-week trial

Prosecutors say 38-year-old Juan Rodriguez first beat his wife after she told them she was leaving in November 2010, then strangled her and cut off her head. He was found guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon.

Defense attorneys tried to get jurors to spare Rodriguez’s life, arguing he had intellectual limitations and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder from growing up in war-torn El Salvador.
