PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island House Democrats are maneuvering and meeting to discuss what to do following federal and state law enforcement raids on House Speaker Gordon Fox’s home and Statehouse office.

More than two dozen lawmakers met Friday evening at the behest of Majority Leader Nick Mattiello of Cranston, who called it an “informational caucus” to talk about the future of the House. Mattiello told The Associated Press that he wants to be the next speaker, and is aware that other Democratic House members, including Chris Blazejewski and Mike Marcello, are also interested in the top spot. Neither lawmaker returned messages.

Mattiello says the raids are a distraction from the legislature’s work but stopped short of calling for Fox to step down. He says there is no plan to seek Fox’s ouster.
