MARTINEZ, Calif. (AP) - Contra Costa Sheriff’s officials say a 24-year-old man was found unresponsive in his jail cell hours after he was booked and later pronounced dead.

The man, who was not identified, was booked into County Jail in Martinez around 1 a.m. Thursday following his arrest on an outstanding warrant and on suspicion of resisting arrest.

Sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee tells the Contra Costa Times (https://bit.ly/1dxtWbd) the man indicated he wanted to harm himself during a routine medical screening and was placed in a safety cell and regularly checked on by deputies.

A deputy found him unresponsive around 7:30 a.m. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The Sheriff’s Office and Contra Costa District Attorney are investigating the death.
