RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A federal judge has dismissed a civil rights lawsuit brought against two Brunswick County sheriff’s deputies in the wounding of a man near Leland almost seven years ago.
Deputies James Sheehan and Brian Carlisle shot George Cooper after responding to Cooper’s mobile home in 2007 after a neighbor’s complaint of loud arguing. The lawsuit filed in 2010 alleged that Cooper’s civil rights had been violated.
But on Thursday U.S. District Court Judge James Dever dismissed the case after a jury in Raleigh found that Cooper fired first at the deputies.
An investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation had earlier cleared the deputies.
