SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Two Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man armed with an assault rifle on Sunday morning after he pointed a handgun at them.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Lisa Bowman says deputies responded to calls of shots fired near Antelope Road at about 2:15 a.m.

They confronted the man they found carrying an assault rifle, and ordered him to drop the weapon, but he refused. She says the deputies shot him when he then pulled out a handgun and pointed it at them.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released his name, pending notification of next of kin, but described him as a male in his late 20s.

The deputies have been placed on administrative leave and the shooting is being internally investigated.
