PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - St. Patrick’s Day may have come and gone this year, but Rhode Island lawmakers are extending the festivities with a joint event also honoring St. Joseph’s Day.

The state’s General Assembly plans to recognize both saints Wednesday with its annual celebration of Irish and Italian heritage.

Wednesday is St. Joseph’s Day while Monday was St. Patrick’s Day.

The two holidays are of big importance in Rhode Island, which is heavily Catholic and has large Irish-American and Italian-American populations.

Because of the legislative calendar lawmakers often celebrate both holidays on a single day at the Statehouse.
