TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - The ex-wife of a retired Tacoma police detective with Alzheimer’s is accused of spending thousands of dollars of his money without his permission.
Rhoda Ramirez, who also is a former cop, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to identity theft and forgery charges.
The News Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1nErDgk ) she was led out of Pierce County Superior Court in handcuffs, although she was later expected to post $10,000 bail.
The 52-year-old Ramirez moved back in with her ex-husband after their divorce. He had authorized her to write checks from his account for household expenses.
She’s accused of spending as much as $30,000 on other expenses, such as her daughter’s rent, car payments, insurance and cellphones. Her lawyer, Barbara Corey, says the husband approved of all the spending.
