ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - An annual tsunami drill in Alaska is scheduled for March 27, followed a few hours later by an earthquake preparedness exercise.

This year’s checkup on the emergency alert code falls on the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Alaska earthquake.

The Anchorage Daily News (https://is.gd/C82dsX) says the tsunami drill is set to start at 10:15 a.m. in coastal areas including Prince William Sound, Kenai Peninsula, Kodiak and the Aleutian Islands.

State emergency management spokesman Jeremy Zidek says a standard emergency alert will interrupt radio and television programs, and public sirens will sound.

Later that day, the state will hold the emergency preparedness exercise, called the Great Alaska ShakeOut.

Zidek says about 70,000 Alaskans have signed up for the 1:36 p.m. drill, pledging to “drop, cover and hold on.”
