PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland Public Schools Superintendent Carole Smith says an improving economy and property tax revenue will allow the district to increase spending by about $20 million and add about 180 new staff members for the next school year.

She told the Board of Education on Monday about plans to add 150 teachers and about 30 support staff.

The budget plans will be formally presented to the board on March 31.
