FANNETT, Texas (AP) - Nobody has been hurt in a fire that severely damaged a rural Southeast Texas school just hours before the start of classes for the day.

KFDM-TV (https://bit.ly/PLnKHH ) reports authorities are trying to determine what sparked the blaze that caused the roof of Hamshire-Fannett (fah-NET’) Elementary School to collapse.

Jefferson County sheriff’s Deputy Rod Carroll says emergency responders received a call about 1:30 a.m. CDT Tuesday about the school on fire. Flames and smoke were pouring out of the building when firefighters arrived.

Superintendent Pamela Morris says the Hamshire-Fannett Independent School District has canceled classes systemwide Tuesday in the wake of the fire. Further details on damage to the elementary school weren’t immediately available.

The district is about 70 miles east of Houston.
