LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A cat has been rescued in Dona Ana County after being stranded atop a 60-foot power pole for three days.

Several county animal control officers, a veterinarian and two El Paso Electric linemen rescued the female tabby-mix named Athena on Monday afternoon.

It survived a rainstorm and gusty winds since last Friday.

An animal control supervisor was hoisted up to the cat’s location in a bucket truck provided by El Paso Electric.

The utility company disconnected electricity in the area while the rescue was underway.

The cat belongs to a 16-year-old girl whose family has lived on their East Mesa property since 1984.

Aside from being dehydrated, authorities say the cat appeared to be in good health.
