PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - There’s a new proposal in Rhode Island intended to help the state prepare for the effects of climate change.
Legislation announced last week by Democratic state Rep. Arthur Handy of Cranston would create a committee to study the effects of climate change and coordinate efforts to respond to it. It would also set out goals for reducing carbon emissions in the coming decades.
Handy says Rhode Island is particularly vulnerable to climate change and could be a national leader in preparing for it.
Climate change is expected to lead to more severe weather in Rhode Island, along with higher sea levels, rising ocean temperatures, coastal erosion and flooding.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee recently created a Climate Change Council to coordinate the state’s efforts to prepare for climate change.
