BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore City police officer is in critical but stable condition after being shot multiple times in the upper body.

Police say the shooting happened around 7 p.m. Friday in the 1900 block of Belair Road.

Deputy Police Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez said Friday at a news conference that the officer was off-duty and sitting in his parked truck when it happened. Rodriguez says the officer was, from all indications, a bystander.

The officer underwent surgery at a hospital. His name is not being released. Police are searching for the shooter.
