ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York state police again have set up special traffic enforcement efforts this weekend in advance of St. Patrick’s Day.
New York drivers can expect a number of sobriety checkpoints and additional DWI patrols. Underage drinking and sales to minors details also will be targeted.
The effort runs through the Irish holiday on Monday.
During St. Patrick’s Day weekend last year, troopers made 204 arrests for DWI and issued nearly 10,000 tickets.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 269 people were killed by drunk drivers on St. Patrick’s Day from 2007 through 2011.
Troopers warn that walking impaired can be dangerous, too, and advise party-goers to designate a sober friend for the walk home.
