EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - A southwestern Illinois man has been ordered to spend three months in federal prison on charges he bought a gas stove by forging a check belonging to a village he worked for.
Thirty-seven-year-old Douglas Knowles, a former Washington Park streets superintendent, also was sentenced Friday in East St. Louis to six months of post-prison home detention.
Knowles pleaded guilty in November to a felony count of possessing and presenting a forged check.
Federal prosecutors say Knowles was Washington Park’s streets superintendent in December 2012 when he bought a gas stove from a Fairview Heights store with a check bearing the forged signature of the village’s mayor.
Authorities say Knowles installed the appliance in his home.
