MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Mesa police say the body of an 11-year-old boy who went missing from his home has been found in a canal.

Lt. Ed Wessing says Caruel J. Udall, who had Down syndrome, was reported missing around 9:30 a.m. Saturday after family members discovered their dog clawing his way out of the canal.

Mesa police and Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies initiated a search on the air and ground around the property near Ray and Power roads.

Wessing says rescue divers with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office located the body about four hours later.

Authorities say it appears Caruel, who went by C.J., and the dog were able to get to the canal through a fence opening.

Wessing says they then likely fell in.
