SYDNEY (AP) - Alessandro Del Piero’s time in the A-League will soon be over, with media reports late Friday suggesting he will not be offered a new contract for next season by Sydney FC.
Fairfax Media said the Sydney FC board met during the week and decided not to offer the former Juventus striker a one-year contract extension he was seeking.
Del Piero, who is reported to be earning about $4 million a season with Sydney FC and turns 40 in November, sat out Friday’s 1-1 draw with the Brisbane Roar in Sydney due to back and hamstring tightness.
Similar complaints have restricted his match time this season - his second in Australia - after a strong debut campaign in 2012-13 that yielded a club-record 14 goals.
